ABSTRACT

Diwaliwan, a glossy monthly magazine published in Hong Kong, caters to Filipino/a migrant workers around the globe. While pictures of Philippine movie stars and “Ms. Diwaliwan” monthly beauty contest winners usually grace the front page of the magazine, the most striking image on the cover is the notation of the price in the Hong Kong dollar, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Japanese yen, Italian lire, Spanish peseta, and at least a dozen other currencies. While the widespread circulation of Diwaliwan points to the existence of the Filipino/a diaspora, the magazine’s contents reveal some aspects of its readership.1 This magazine periodically covers issues concerning overseas domestic work. This is because the majority of Filipina migrants scattered all over the globe are domestic workers.
