ABSTRACT

Media literacy, citizenship education and the fight against discrimination: from an educational point of view they can be seen as three separate fields that connect to each other in a narrow, complementary and fruitful manner. The democratic project with its values of freedom and equality is at the heart of the relations among these fields. The teachers' online training course in media literacy against discrimination, experimented within the European project e-Engagement against Violence (e-EAV), embodies this double approach. Grounded in e-EAV findings, this chapter seeks to identify effective educational strategies and challenges of teachers' online training in media literacy and citizenship education. The integration of media literacy and citizenship education in the e-EAV project was seen as a key strategy to raise awareness and train teachers and educators against discrimination and populist discourses. The idea of working on media, populism and discrimination encompasses both media literacy and citizenship education.
