ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book aims to open up the discussion about the process of becoming a psychoanalyst and specifically, about the development of a psychoanalytic identity and voice. The development of voice is a major building block towards the achievement of a mature identity. The book presents personal essays from twelve psychoanalysts who have distinguished themselves in the field through a variety of developmental journeys. This is a group diverse in age, seniority, background, gender, race, theoretical orientation, as well as interests. Each developmental journey is unique. The purpose of presenting these narratives is to provide an opportunity for learning, personal inspiration, and support, as well as to loosen some of the constrictions that may inhibit creative, productive, and responsible training. This chapter inspires the readers to consider their own experiences and analytic identity in fresh ways.
