ABSTRACT

Ownership of an additional home is prevalent in many destinations around the world (Coppock 1977; Hall and Müller 2004). This additional residence is commonly referred to as a second home or vacation home. With the exception of an investment property, specifically used for income generation, second homes are typically used by the owners on a seasonal or part-time basis for leisure pursuits. The owner has incredible flexibility in their utilization of the home because they can use it themselves, share it with visiting friends and relatives (VFR), and rent it to others on a short-term basis. Recent research has brought attention to the characteristics and behaviours of residents who host visitors in a destination (Young, Corsun, and Baloglu 2007; Shani and Uriely 2012).
