ABSTRACT

XENOPHON (?430-after 362 B.C.) Greek general successively in Athenian, Persian and Spartan service and historian. His many stylistically lucid works, especially the Anabasis (Gr = March North), formed the foundation of the classically based higher instruction which from 1700 to 1914 gave most educated Englishmen a common background, as well as a knowledge of 4th cent. B.C. Greek and Persian politics.
