In January 1829, at the age of eleven, Branwell fashioned the first of the miniature magazines, modeled on Blackwood's Magazine, which he edited until Charlotte took over in August. This poem constitutes the "Poetry" section, and reflects Branwell's interest in events in the American colonies, especially slavery and trade with Britain. See also the comment for No. 4 below. At the end of the poem, an adaptation of the British National Anthem, C T (Captain Tree) notes, "this was sung at the young mens ["young mens" canceled] our oratiorio and was much approved."
