ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that although girls' educational rights still deserve explicit attention, an equal amount of emphasis should be given to the crisis that boys are currently facing. It discusses the nature of boys in regard to play, and explains how video games may help mitigate the achievement gap. The chapter provides suggestions and implications for school districts, educators, and educational researchers towards educational reform. Boys' culture is a collection of beliefs, values, and behaviors that are accepted by boys within a particular society. Generally, play helps children develop social skills and allow boys to release excessive energy and emotional stress. Boys are frequently regarded as physically more active than girls from their infancy to adolescence. Some researchers have blamed violent video games for escalating aggressive and vicious behavior in schools such as massive shootings. The autonomous environment video games create provides a psychosocial moratorium that allows boys to explore who they are and what role they play in society.
