ABSTRACT

This chapter presents theories about observation-based learning, and their usefulness in fostering design explorations of a more complex and holistic nature. It shows the social and behavioral science theories to drive exploratory design from different points of view. The narrative and chapter-end exercises guide students to discover clues that inform design possibilities relevant to site-design projects. The explorations outlines in the chapter augment traditional design methods. The drawing-based explorations tap into imaginative design possibilities. Without these exploratory exercises, valuable design ideas could go undiscovered in project work that demands fast-turnaround conclusions. These visually communicated explorations are likened to one's own design precedents, from which one discerns new and enriching design directions. Self-generated or imagined precedents interact with one's design thinking, generating fruitful ideas for innovative design application. The chapter provides quick paths to imaginative, fresh, and artistic ideas. The exercise results readily enlighten design work and are helpful in fulfilling demands for swift and thorough design solutions formed with artistry.
