ABSTRACT

This chapter explains a number of aspects of hand-generated field notes, which may be drawing types in themselves, or components of drawings. Considering the functions of drawings made in the field in this way allows one to put them in a methodological framework with respect to developing the field sketching technique, which integrates new thinking on perception. New thinking on visual perception can be applied in comparing photography with drawing in the field. Harry Heft considers the active perceiver stance, with the more passive spectator stance. Drawing makes us look harder and forces one's observation. There is a tendency to exaggerate vertical and detail elements. The resulting representation is an interpretation of the landscape, which is always to some degree an experiential perspective, depicting one's impressions, rather than absolute visual accuracy. Gestural and expressive drawings access the energy, mood and character of landscapes, as well as the temperament, feelings and emotion evoked in the practitioner.
