ABSTRACT

This chapter is for all primary school teachers and trainee teachers who want to add new skills and ideas to their teaching repertoire. The ideas that we propose for 'Electronic Systems' aim to be engaging, fun and practical to carry out in a primary school setting. Electricity is a form of energy that can move along wires in a flow called an electric current. These days, it is used to power everything from lights to computers and mobile phones. The flow of electricity can be controlled by switches and resistors so that its effect can be moderated, increased or turned off altogether. In an electricity-reliant world, it is essential that children gain an understanding of how electronic systems work. Studying electronic systems in D&T should build on and help to reinforce the knowledge gained in Science lessons. Through their understanding of circuits, children will also develop a respect for the power and potential hazards of electricity in their everyday lives.
