ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book addresses concrete cases and circumstances related to researching the military in different disciplines and socio-historical contexts. It explores complex power relations with regard to the state and military agencies use of anthropology concepts. Sabina Federic looks at the distance-proximity issue from a different angle, and explores the problem of the researcher's autonomy in the context of a MoD commissioned research about the military profession in Argentina. The book focuses on the relational dynamics of the research process is the question of the researcher's multiple positionalities. It shows how Rosana Guber's research experience with Argentine Air Force officers who fought in the Malvinas/Falklands War impacted her own notions of ethnographic fieldwork. The book describes the lifelong activities as researchers, teachers and cadvisors, showing how life trajectories and practices relate to historical circumstances.
