ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the media corporations that are without a doubt the largest in the region and they are backed by the immensely powerful capital of Gulf States, especially Saudi Arabia. It examines the cases that leave no doubt that the species of capitalism that are allowed to develop in the region do so under a particular political context. The chapter examines the companies that are clear indicators of the close link between the state and the capital. The simultaneous high-ranking positions in the state, the royal family, and the capitalist class are indeed possible and even appear to be the norm. In the past three decades, many states in the Middle East have introduced economic reforms and policies that have transformed and remolded the region. Such programs, negotiated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, are usually labeled as economic liberalization.
