ABSTRACT

Implications for teaching division: The division running record use of concrete materials, pictures, diagrams, and discussion increases student's familiarity with the process of multiplication and assists in their observation of regularities and patterns. The idea is to have conversations and do activities with students where they see relationships with numbers and 'invent' their own strategies. Students will need some guidance; they are not going to just make all the connections teachers shouldn't be directly just teaching strategy by strategy. Teachers should use a recording sheet to note strategies used in small-guided math groups. Games should also be an integral part of small group practice. Teachers should design learning experiences where students 'practice strategy retrieval' by working on a particular strategy. All children are able to master the basic facts including children with learning disabilities. All children can construct efficient mental tools that will help them.
