ABSTRACT

Math Fluency Running Records begin with an overview followed by three core parts that are given to place students in instructionally appropriate fluency guided math groups and math workstations. In the overview of the Math Running Record, the teacher introduces the Math Running Record and explains the different parts. During Part I, the teacher assesses for automaticity instant recall and accuracy. In Part II, the teacher assesses for flexibility and efficiency. In Part III, the teacher takes a closer look at the student's mathematical disposition. Students are given a set of benchmark problems in order to see and hear if students have automaticity instant recall and accuracy with the basic facts. Benchmark problems assess the exact fluency levels for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students' facility in using basic math facts often has a significant effect on their confidence in themselves as mathematicians. Throughout the process teachers are recording what is happening through specific codes.
