ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how humanitarian work psychology (HWP) was applied to an existing maternal and child health programme in Bonthe District, Sierra Leone, in order to better understand Community health workers (CHW) motivation and to reduce CHW attrition. The following section describes how it put these principles into practice in order to implement the operational research objectives for an existing CHW-reliant maternal and child programme in Sierra Leone. Being mindful of proposed approach to (HWP), a research had undertooked within an existing government-supported maternal and child health programme delivered by an international nongovernmental organisation (NGO), in partnership with the Bonthe District health management team. The research findings on volunteer motivation and how it changes over time should provide useful information that will assist communities in their future recruitment of CHWs. The chapter also described an example of how a HWP research study can potentially contributed to addressing the unacceptably high levels of maternal and infant mortality in Sierra Leone.
