ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a case study in Hong Kong, where a group of psychologists responded to the government's call for alleviating intergenerational poverty, not only through their psychological knowledge and skills but also by their strategic collaboration with key community stakeholders at an organizational level. Intergenerational poverty became one of the key domains of the Chief Executive's Policy Address, but this remains a long overdue commitment of the Hong Kong government. This study not only provides information on the projects' implementation and effectiveness, but also aims to obtain insights for establishing long-term goals and policies that promote child development in Hong Kong. Drawing on our Child Development Fund (CDF) consultancy experience, it have identified multiple potential opportunities where humanitarian work psychology (HWP), can contribute to poverty alleviation. These include personnel recruitment and selection, mentor development and performance management, ongoing monitoring and improvement systems and organizational consultation.
