ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter deals with the specificities of mountaineering, in particular physiological and behavioural effects of altitude hypoxia. The authors provide practical applications for acclimatization to altitude and safety, including high altitude medicine, detection, prevention and treatment of acute mountain sickness, high altitude pulmonary oedema and high altitude cerebral oedema. This chapter also presents the effect of cold on the human body and the symptoms, prevention and treatment of frostbite and hypothermia.
