ABSTRACT

The correlation between the person and his world is a historical question, and, as such, a question of history. It is a correlation which has been formulated in so many different forms in different societies, social strata, classes, that it cannot be described in any sort of philosophical generality without becoming schematized. In what follows, therefore, I make no attempt to deal even approximately with the full range of forms taken by this correlation and limit myself to a description of certain general tendencies.
