ABSTRACT

W hatever Cardigan's apprehensions may have been, he gave little sign of them. Inspector John Busain was on duty in the whitewashed office of the W andsworth station-house when the pony-chaise drew up outside. It was just before six o'clock on the evening of the duel. He heard a tap on the window and, turning round, saw Cardigan standing outside. Captain Douglas stood behind Cardigan and Con stable Dann was not yet in view. Busain had never seen Cardigan before but, noting that this was evidently a gentleman of some importance, Busain bowed to him.
