ABSTRACT

Reading is becoming more pervasive and a critical condition for inclusion, education systems seem to have stalled, at best, in their efforts to prepare students for the literacy demands of the information society. The REading as problem SOLVing (RESOLV) model proposes a different view of when reading begins. Reading begins before the visual fixation of the printed page. The RESOLV theory of reading aims to account for readers' Context and Task Models and how these models contribute to the unfolding of the reading process. The RESOLV model emphasizes five important decisions: "When to read" decision, "What to read" decision, "How to read" decision, "Validation" decision, and "Stop reading" decision. The RESOLV highlights the role of goals and plans in reading. It is a specific type of problem solving. The RESOLV model proposes that reading rests on a set of basic abilities, but also that it extends to a set of advanced, modality-specific language processes.
