ABSTRACT

What first impressed me about Mannie was the way he let me abide in and muddle through my confusing emotions, yet responded to the feelings directly. He had the ability to convey his resonance and yet sit still with the muddle and my own obvious wish to get out of it, without jumping in to make sense prematurely, and somehow I knew this was going to take me into as yet unknown places. More generally, in comparing him with others, his depth of empathy was quite the exception, and I knew of no one with his intelligence, warmth and complex understanding. Once I arrived at Postdoc, I found, by comparison with Mannie, the other interpersonalists appeared bossy and shallow; and, of course, the contrast with the Freudians was just as great—they seemed chilly and withholding. Neither group seemingly had any sense of how to reach the baby or small child within, which was Mannie’s obvious focus and strength.
