ABSTRACT

Modern Indonesia, a vast archipelago of nearly 18,000 islands that stretches for over 6,000 km along the equator, encompasses a broad range of cultural heritage, including early hominid fossils, massive Buddhist structures, wooden mosques, Hindu temples and a wide variety of vernacular buildings. According to fossil dating, hominids inhabited what is now the island of Java nearly two million years ago, which places the region among the world’s earliest in the development of fundamental cultural trends.
