ABSTRACT

The mobile environment provides an exciting frontier for geographic information systems (GIS) development, especially in the evolution of location-based services (LBS) for the public sector. While 4G networks have become increasingly common, the devices often come equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and near field communications (NFC) capabilities. The devices commonly include several hardware features, such as the geographical positioning system (GPS), camera, and sensors, all of which aid in location-based services. This chapter examines the prospects and challenges of location-based services for the public sector. Geographic information systems are the core component of location-based services. Modern mobile devices offer four core advantages for location-based services. Location is significant for social media platforms too, although they are primarily oriented toward social connections and sharing information. Whereas the electronic government entailed anytime access to public e-services, mobile government implies "anytime, anywhere" government services on demand at the location.
