ABSTRACT

The Waveland Business Incubator was created out of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina when it hit the downtown area of Waveland, Mississippi, as well as the hundreds of homes that were lost in the storm. Created with passive solar strategies, the building was designed with durable materials, but also pays homage to the vernacular tradition of the areas through the use of dogtrots and front porches to engage the rest of the community. The building was also raised out of the flood hazard zone to better adjust to future storms, which also resulted in visual connections to other parts of the community. Community has become an even more important aspect of the project as the use has recently changed from a business incubator to Studio Waveland, displaying modern art and creating space for artists studios.
