ABSTRACT

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Biloxi, Mississippi, bringing with it a 30-foot tidal surge. The Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum was destroyed, along with much of its collection. Since then, the Museum was determined to continue to preserve and exhibit the Gulf Coast’s maritime heritage, and has worked to recover, restore, and rebuild its collection. The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum preserves and interprets the maritime history and heritage of Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The new 19,580 SF building replaces the Museum’s previous home and houses exhibits and gallery spaces, meeting rooms, a production shop, administrative areas and storage. The new museum was built on its original Point Cadet site and embraces the challenge of situating the building on its property outside of the newly defined Velocity Zone.
