ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about children explore, observe and record different changes in the school grounds. The world is a constantly changing place; some changes occur quickly and are easy to see but others are slow and difficult to detect without long-term repeated observations. Outdoors in the school grounds, the Sun evaporates moisture, can melt substances, rain dissolves some solids or changes materials in other ways, the wind can blow away sand, soil or damage structures, while freezing temperatures change the state of liquids to ice. Animals also have an effect on the environment, building homes, collecting materials, eating plants, while plants grow and create shade or crack tarmac. Many of these changes occur regularly in the school grounds and few people notice them; this activity focuses children's observations on changes taking place 'under their noses', and makes links between cause and effect.
