ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on weaving using natural materials to make the frame and for weaving. Alternatively, children could weave using fencing or plastic mesh fixed to a fence. Science in itself is a creative subject, demanding that children problem solve, linking together different ideas to create new knowledge, and taking risks by, in relation to their own experience, thinking the unthinkable. These are some of the hallmarks of creativity; in any area of understanding, linking art with science is a natural extension of creativity in science, bringing together skills in weaving with an understanding and appreciation of the beauty and delicateness of the natural world. Weaving is one of the oldest traditions in the world. In fact humans were weaving as long ago as the New Stone age the Egyptians used weaving and the Chinese used silk, while people in India used the fibres of the cotton plant.
