ABSTRACT

This chapter develops children's understanding of a single tree through observation across several years, so that children begin to understand how a tree changes over time and that its seasonal cycle is repeated each year. Working in groups, children choose and adopt a tree in the school grounds. Depending on the ability of the children, give them a sketchbook and pencil to sketch the shape of their tree, concentrating on whether it is tall, short, wide, narrow, oval, circular, heart shaped. Many school grounds have trees which provide opportunities for children not only to develop their understanding of a plant and its life cycle but also of classification, habitats and food chains. Children use the world of digital technology to choose how to record what they find out about their tree according to their ability and interest.
