ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about research activity which begins and ends outdoors. Children become experts on a type of dinosaur and present their research around a large-scale playground diagram of the dinosaur. English palaeontologist Richard Owen coined the term 'dinosaur' in 1842. Scientists use some basic rules to decide which ancient creatures are dinosaurs, such as they: lived between 250 and 65 million years ago; lived on land; had straight legs tucked underneath their bodies; and were reptiles. Within these basic rules, scientists group dinosaurs into different categories, e.g. using the shape of their hip. Groups of children draw a diagram of their dinosaur on the ground. Smaller dinosaurs could be scaled up and the largest dinosaurs, scaled down. Children research how long ago dinosaurs lived. Dinosaurs lived in the Mesozoic Era which is divided into three periods: the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous.
