ABSTRACT

Children collect and study snails, observing them and their habitats, sketching and making notes leading to asking and answering their own questions about snails. This activity can also be replicated using other invertebrates, e.g. slugs, worms and woodlice. Children set off on their snail hunt. When they find one or more snails they should record the habitat, by sketching, taking photographs or video clips and describing the conditions and the plants, e.g. shady, under nettle or cow parsley leaves. Snails are gastropods, and have many adaptations. For gardeners, the worst adaptation is that the snails are hermaphrodites -that is they have both male and female reproductive organs. Use Google Images to show children the work of the artist David Klein, who created colourful and engaging illustrations of a range of animals - including a snail. These bright, multi-coloured pictures are easy for children to identify with and to emulate.
