ABSTRACT

In this chapter children choose a constellation to research. They find out facts and the story behind its name, and then they recreate it as a large constellation drawn on the playground. Working in pairs, children choose a constellation to research and make a fact file about it using, for example, index cards. Since the constellations are drawn on the school playground it means that the rest of the school has access to them, and children will enjoy staying with their constellations either during playtime, or a specific time during the day when other classes can visit. Constellation is a group of stars that often form a shape or pattern that helps us to recognise it from Earth. The universe is huge and the numbers are equally big, so this type of science activity brings children into contact with large numbers and helps to develop a sense of awe and amazement of the sheer number of stars in the universe.
