ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the children make foam 'snowballs', then add a 'magic potion' and observe the effects; this is definitely an outdoors activity as the result can be quite messy and pungent!. The chemical reaction between sodium bicarbonate and vinegar generates bubbles of carbon dioxide gas which cause the fizzing. A chemical reaction is a process that changes one set of chemical substances to another. Initially, the carbon dioxide gas bubbles are trapped within the foam, which makes it expand, but eventually the gas will escape into the air. This chemical change is irreversible. Children write an instructional text including imperative verbs to help other children to make their own magic potion snowballs. A word bank of key scientific vocabulary could be provided, e.g. reaction, change, cause, effect, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and gas, carbon dioxide, reversible and irreversible. The children could listen to the instrumental song 'Popcorn' by Hot Butter and appraise the music in the same way.
