ABSTRACT

This is an activity which, of course, can only be carried out when it is snowing. It provides an opportunity for children to observe snowflakes using a microscope, so it will be important to make sure that children have had experience of using a microscope first. Prompt children to think about how to hold containers, because cradling the container in warm hands may cause the snow to melt immediately. Melting is the physical process which occurs when a solid changes to a liquid state. Some of the heat energy in the room transfers to the snow, it melts and then the resulting liquid eventually warms to room temperature. Engage children in creative writing - for example, a piece entitled 'Snowflake's Adventure'. Identify seasonal weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location of cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles.
