ABSTRACT

In commemoration of Melanie Beresford’s untimely death, this paper re-examines the

key themes and arguments that she made in her 2008 article, ‘Doi Moi in Review: The

Challenges of Building Market Socialism in Vietnam,’ and in her other scholarly works.1

Her findings provide insights into our own research, which addresses the key themes of

this special journal issue: the interconnections between global capitalist integration and

industrialization, and their effects on the Vietnamese labor markets.
