ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents some of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. It explains how to move forward creating and supporting positive cross-overs and connections. Many researchers, practitioners, and policy makers seek silos. For instance, perhaps they research climate change adaptation (CCA). They frame their problem and collect their data according to CCA paradigms. They use only CCA theories and cite only publications covering CCA. CCA has deliberately and methodically aimed to separate itself from disaster risk reduction (DRR) as a distinct and new field, with its own publications, conferences, policies, and funding streams. Even CCA and climate change mitigation remain firmly separated, despite repeated calls to link them from the beginning of these fields' formal founding. It remained a tenet of much DRR work, meaning that CCA could easily have embraced it and deepened it for developing CCA approaches.
