ABSTRACT

Teaching about gender-based violence has always presented challenges for schools. Over the past five years a number of school-based pilot projects designed to prevent gender-based violence and build respectful relationships have been evaluated in secondary schools in Victoria, Australia. This chapter examines how the key elements of ‘best practice’ recommended in the resulting report worked in reality for schools implementing education about gender-based violence and respectful relationships. By exploring teachers’ and students’ experiences the chapter examines the barriers and enablers to effective practice, including whether the content and approaches in the materials were useful in assisting teachers to teach about gender-based violence.
