ABSTRACT

American universities and colleges have long been expected to actively prevent, intervene and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) on campus. The 2011 US Department of Education ‘Dear Colleague’ letter put universities nationwide on notice that GBV is covered under Title IX, and warned that federal financial aid dollars could be lost for non-compliance. While much work remains, recent innovations hold real promise for change on and off campuses. This chapter examines the inauguration of the Campus Safety Project at the University of Southern Maine, 2010–2013. It represents an overview of GBV prevention, education and response measures at one US university and provides recommendations in light of critical issues facing US campuses.
