ABSTRACT

The work done in creativity and by creativity researchers helped to expand the concept of giftedness, as well as develop instruments for the measurement of creativity and consideration of how creativity might be cultivated in children. In 1958, E. Paul Torrance's creativity research began in earnest at the University of Minnesota. Creativity researchers like Torrance and Calvin Taylor recognized the impact that creativity research could have on gifted education, especially the limitations of Intelligent Quotient centric indicators of giftedness. Taylor's Multiple Talent Model provided students opportunities to display talents in a range of areas including academics, creativity, decision-making, planning, forecasting, communication, implementing, human relations, and discerning opportunities. The very first Governor's School, founded in North Carolina, was initially designed as a summer program to augment the education that gifted students received during the regular school year and keep this population interested in their educational pursuits.
