ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of retirees migrating to a new country is not something that only

began in the recent past. This has been taking place as early as the 1970s in Northern

Europe where retirees from the UK and Germany migrated to areas near the

Mediterranean Sea (King, Warnes, & Williams, 2000). Migration does not have a

singular pattern but criss-crosses boundaries and demography. According to the

AON (2010) report, many retirees from Western and Northern Europe favour a

warmer country such as Spain. More specifically, the report indicates that 58% of

respondents from the UK, 54% from Germany and 47% from Switzerland desire

migrating to another country.
