ABSTRACT

Many nations have recognized the Palestinian right to self-determination, including countries of the Western Alliance. This analysis will examine the relationship between Palestinian leadership, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and two groups in the alliance-the Common Market countries, and the USA. The relationship between Europe and the Palestinians has not always been smooth but while this alliance has been dominated by the power of the USA, the situation has begun to change. Palestinian parents teach their children to support Arafat and the PLO. The family seems to be the most important agency of political socialization among the children. The Palestinians are highly politicized and, relative to other Arabs, they are highly educated and boast the highest number of university graduates per capita among all Arab states. Fouad Ajami, the lure of the West refers to the complex love-hate relationship Arabs have with the West in general, and with the USA in particular.
