ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses knowing Jones seems to have a different sort of logic from knowing French, knowing what to do, knowing that the earth is round and knowing how to play Canasta. When therefore we undertake to analyse know in this sense, people shall have to admit in advance that there is no guarantee that our analysis will be anything like as satisfactory and the analysis of knowing that; and it will certainly be more complicated and less clear cut. So people have a case which is reminiscent of knowing Jones; for know not only implies a capacity but also reports, in an indirect but nevertheless clear manner, an actual state of affairs, past or even present. The author has given dispositional analyses of these knowing what sentences, the decision element is embedded in the adverb correctly; and that the implied decision is a personal, a dominant and a pseudodominant.
