ABSTRACT

Places that have been declared heritage sites are often considered potential tourism desti-

nations. However, development of tourism at heritage sites involves negotiation of differ-

ent interests and interpretations regarding the heritage resource and its possible uses

(Graham et al., 2000; Heldt Cassel & Pashkevich, 2011). Heritage sites are often built

on the memories and remains of previous societies and production processes, but are

given new meanings in contemporary contexts. Heritage tourism is a practice where old

buildings and cultural assets are reinterpreted and re-imaged within a tourism framework.
