ABSTRACT

One of the greatest challenges facing the practice of ecological restoration in the twenty-first century is rapid pace and global scale of current and projected environmental change. Restorationists, like many groups of people, have been aware of the changes for many years but only recently have begun to fully grasp rapidity and scale of environmental changes. One of largest concerns with rate of environmental change is that many species will have limited ability to migrate in order to live in environments that have best suite of conditions for their survival and reproduction. Human activity may drive environmental change either directly or indirectly, but in either case human needs for food, freshwater, fuel and building materials have drastically increased post-1950 as the human population has grown, and satisfying those needs has consequences for entire planet. The most recent State of the Climate Report paints a gloomy picture and indicates that environmental change in many ways has become a runaway train.
