ABSTRACT

The play is not just about activity; it is also about practising language. It is not surprising therefore that 2-year-olds love to practise their newly found language skills and often give a running commentary of what they are doing, whether someone is listening or not. At this age, children are preoccupied with imitating or taking part in domestic life, whether it is dressing up in adult clothes, pretending to be asleep in a bed or helping to put dirty clothes into washing machine. Domestic play is copying the routine behaviours observed in adults, and it changes over time as cultural behaviour changes. When children imitate domestic life, is described as 'domestic play', which is a little different from imaginative play. Imaginative play goes much further than simply copying life's experiences, such as turning a box into a baby's cot. The role-play area is probably the most important and most popular area in a typical playroom for the 2- to 3-year-olds.
