ABSTRACT

As in any other language, affirmation is the default mode of a sentence in Catalan. Therefore, no special marks are applied to obtain an affirmation. However, in some cases, emphasis is needed to oppose a negative statement or presupposition. When talking about a verb complement, no nomes can also be placed before the verb with the same meaning. However, when the element under scope is the whole sentence, the second element requires que tambe. Catalan can make use of the negative adverb pas, placed after the verb, but it is used only to reinforce prohibitions with a sense of strictness or urgence, or to cancel presuppositions. Apart from the emphasis that can normally be attached to any assertion, specific exclamations can be built by adding qualifiers or quantifiers at the beginning of the sentence, depending on whether the fact to stress is a quantity or a quality.
