ABSTRACT

Emphasizing single elements is possible by adding degree adverbs. Other emphasizing systems are by means of (a) adjectives and adverbs, (b) subcategorizing the emphasized element to a noun expressing quantity or degree, (c) an affix, and (d) adding an interjection to a question or exclamative word. Mateix, meaning 'same', acts as an intensifier, sometimes with the sense of 'oneself' added to a proper name, a noun, or a pronoun. When appearing before a name it stresses identity, thus the meaning is plainly 'same'. However, when it appears after an element, it just emphasizes it. Exclamative and interrogative words can receive emphasis from a postposed taboo word. This belongs to a vulgar, rude register of language, although euphemistic words are often used. The construction qui-sap-lo deserves special attention. This is an emphasizer acting either as an adverb or an adjective, agreeing in gender and number with the noun.
