ABSTRACT

Learning Catalan in primary and secondary education is compulsory in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearics, and Andorra, and possible in the rest of territories (except in the tiny area of El Carxe, Murcia). Catalan can be studied to degree level in the universities of these three main territories, and in the University of Perpinya (Perpignan), in Northern Catalonia. Radio broadcasting in Catalan is especially followed in Catalonia, where in 2014 listeners of stations in Catalan outranked those of stations in Spanish by 1,468,000 to 754,000. TV3 Televisio is the leading channel in Catalonia. Belonging to the autonomous public broadcasting corporation, it broadcasts solely in Catalan, as do the rest of Catalan public channels. However, the amassed audience of all TV channels in Catalan only adds up to 20% of viewers. The situation in the Balearics and in Valencia is similar to that of the radio.
