ABSTRACT

When the experiencing psyche and the things it perceives, subject and object, melt and are absorbed into one another, what takes place may be called metaphysical experience. The author thinks, this is a good designation, but it should be periodically checked, and replaced before it sounds hollow and shrill, before it is taken for granted. Metaphysical experience, connotes an experience transcending the person, who may later recall it as having apparently taken place somehow in relation with him or her; it consists of an awareness of being on the brink of manifestation, in its germinative unity, a unity which is the triad of knower, known and knowing clasped together. In the realm of numbers: apart from the many possible definitions, the idea of number is reached through the very same process of abstraction that leads to metaphysical experience, by stripping being of all its qualities, both essential and incidental. Numbered objects are stripped, in the numbering, of all their characters.
