ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the centrality of the learning environment in enabling children to develop independence in learning. It explains how, through both the physical and broader learning environment children's independence can be encouraged and promoted. The physical environment should overtly transmit to children the message that learning is important, learning is for everyone and that 'you' are part of 'this' learning environment. The chapter discusses how good pedagogical practice can be developed when teachers and practitioners acknowledge that children respond to learning experiences in different ways. The physical environment should overtly transmit to children, the message that learning is important, learning is for everyone and that 'you' are part of 'this' learning environment. In essence, enabling children to develop as independent learners is dependent on the learning environment teachers and practitioners create. These dimensions of learning underpin the idea of helping children to become self-motivated learners, characterised by a desire to learn, understand and achieve goals.
