ABSTRACT

The principles for an integrative approach to the practice of family therapy will first be presented in this chapter (Carr 2012; Carr and McNulty 2016b). This approach to practice, particularly the formulation of exceptions, has been informed by narrative and solution-focused models of systemic therapy (Franklin et al. 2011; White 2011), the research literature on resilience (Luthar 2003; Walsh 2012; Zolkoski and Bullock 2012; Masten 2013; Rutter 2013; Ungar et al. 2013) and developments within the positive psychology movement (Lopez and Snyder 2009; Carr 2011). In this chapter the way this approach helps clients develop hopeful narratives about themselves and their lives will be shown. The chapter will close with a case example which illustrates this approach to practice.
